In the 1700s, the Potawatmi Indians were the citizens of the area now known as Chicago which they inhabited and at the time knew it as a land of rotting marshlands of onions. In their language onions in that state of decay is called Checagou. In the 300 years since, then this city has grown to a population of 2,896,016 as of the 2000 US Census.
