Have you ever seen a large rock that had a series of tunnels and caves?A How about one with enough firepower to prevent ships from passing between Spain and Africa?A What about a huge rock with a fully operational hospital?A Huh?

RockI am talking about the Rock of Gibraltar.A This huge chunk of limestone is located at the southern tip of Spain overlooking the northern coast of Morocco.A The actual land and rock are British territory, however.A They use it as a military advantage point just as the previous inhabitants have for hundreds of years.

Being limestone means easy digging.A The British took ownership in the late 1700s and decided to burrow tunnels for quick transportationA of theA lookouts.A More tunnels were dug for ventilation and suddenly guns appeared in them.A This beautiful rock quickly became an impenetrable fort.

Today tourists love to walk these tunnels and with a good guide you have views in all directions.A A According to theA ancient Phoenicians, the Rock was the end of the known world.A A This chunk of stone is alsoA one of the famedA Pillars of Hercules.

Not only didA Hercules graceA Gibraltar with his presence, so do another group of characters.A The famous Rock Apes areA Europe’s only primates that are found in the wild.A TheseA guys are fun.A You are on their turf when youA climb to the top.A They are extremely comfortable with people, so have no fear.

Maybe a little too comfortable.A I had bought a bagful of goodies to feed them, and they were excited.A In fact, oneA almost reached into myA pocketA looking forA more.A A Surely, these primates are bound to provideA some great photo opportunities for you and theA family.

There is something for everyone on the Rock of Gibraltar.A The military buffs will be amazed to hear the stories and see some of the guns.A Nature enthusiasts will get a kick out of seeing the monkeys.A Children will love the fact that Hercules was there.A Everyone will be taken back by the breathtaking views for all to see.

Has anyone else ever been to the Rock of Gibraltar?

One of the destinations I’ve always wanted to take. Don’t they have monkeys there that hang out and wait for tourists?

    That’s a great photo.

On a cruise from Lisbon to Rome, we passed Gibraltar at 4 in the morning, so I got up and went on deck to see it. It was dark and quiet but I could see the outline quite clearly. So glad I got up for it!

This is a must see location! The monkeys were really cool.
