5 Things You Don’t Want To Do in a Foreign Country
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” This is a popular saying among travelers. In each of their destinations, they try to adopt local customs and beliefs so they won’t offend anyone. But in each new travel destination, it may be even more important to observe what the locals aren’t dong. Here is a list of some of the things you want to avoid:
Dating a Local in Iran
Iran is one of those countries in which dating a Muslim woman if you don’t share the same faith is illegal. The reverse is true for men as well. It is illegal for Muslim men and women in Iran to maintain relationships with non-Muslim partner.
Showing Affection in Dubai
You would think that with all the architectural marvels and technological innovation going on in Dubai, the country would have an open mindset. Technically though, it is illegal to show affection in Dubai. Two British beachgoers were confident enough to hold hands and found themselves in the center of a cultural war.
Smoking in Bhutan
This Himalayan country punishes smokers. If you’re a smoking addict, better stay away from Bhutan. You’ll be fined 100% tax at customs by simply bringing tobacco. Also, you’ll be fined $225 if you smoke in public.
Vandalizing in Singapore
Singapore is known as a fine city. That is, every mistake you make will cost you a certain “fine”. Littering, chewing gum, jaywalking, and leaving the toilet unlashed, these are just some of the things you should avoid. The charges above are pretty minor compared to vandalism. Michael Fay, an 18-year old American, tried to test his luck. He spray painted some cars and ended up fined, jailed, and punished with four strokes of cane.
Disparaging Royalty in Thailand
Thais take their monarchy seriously, to the degree that insulting any member of the royal family in any way constitutes severe punishment. Take the example of Oliver Jufer, a 57-year old Swiss national who defaced the portrait of a Thai king after drinking. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison (out of the maximum 75) for his actions. But he was forgiven by the affronted king and he didn’t really serve his sentence.

I would read up on cultural and societal norms of any country I visit. In some countries, a woman making eye contact with a man is a “come on.”
I wrote an article on one of my blogs about resources you may use to find information.

The King of Thailand always pardons those convicted of Le Majeste laws but they are usually deported forthwith and blacklisted from the country.

Having lived in Dubai, I know for sure that showing affection by holding hand in public is not an offence. Kissing, DUI and nudity in public is definitely not acceptable. I am sure there is more to the story for the two Brits mentioned in your article.

you don’t want to cross your leg to show the bottom of the sole of your shoe in much of southeast Asia (and apparently in a place like Iraq as we recently learned) - it’s an insult.
Also, while the ‘OK’ hand sign in the US is a thumb touching the index finger with the three fingers splayed out is seen as acceptable in the USA, this is actually considered obscene in some parts of the world. Just say ‘OK” with no hand signal!

I agree with “Khalid”, as holding hands in Dubai is not an offense, not even kissing if it is not showing any sex or adult actions on public, but what happened with these 2 British couple, is that they were caught having sex in public in Jumaira Beach, which I believe that it is not even allowed in any country in the world not even in nude beaches, so I think you are not justifying countries in your article.
Any way, what ever I am I should act exactly as you said in the beginning, this will be the safest way to be accepted in any country in the world.
Sorry for feeding back my opinion very honestly.
