Home is Where the Vacation is…
Have you ever talked to someone who lived somewhere really interesting like NYC and they never saw the Empire State Building? You made sure you did on your trip there and could not believe they didn’t. Are you making the same faux pas in your hometown?
Times are tough economically. Statistically, we are traveling less and less even though gas prices are very affordable. People are staying home. Time to make lemonade out of these lemons.
We all say there is either nothing to do in our town OR we have plenty of time to get to it…we live here. From here you will achieve two victories: get out of the house and finally learn something about your hometown. “I don’t know where to start…boo hoo.” What would you do if you were going somewhere new and exotic? Research.
Some people order brochures from the local welcome centers. Some go online to websites. Some even ask travel agents. These are all great starting points. You probably even know of a few places right off the top of your head.
Even my hometown of Warren, Ohio. There is nothing exciting about this place…so I thought. It turns out, Warren was a major artery for the Underground Railroad. Some of the old buildings even have boarded up tunnel passages. The library I went to often as a child has an awesome museum on the second floor that I never knew about. You can even see the house I grew up in…:)
I am sure that your city has many exciting things, too. If not, a nearby city is certain to have something. It will be fun to research your corner of the world and see what you is hiding there. I now live in Charleston, SC, and I have only begun to explore.
Don’t get bummed about not going to the beach this year, take action and see your city. Be resourceful and learn about the place you call home.
Tell me and the others about things to see and do in your hometowns. Give us some ideas we may not have thought about.

Great suggestion! People often forget about all of the wonderful things to do in their own area!

So true. I’ve lived all my life in San Francisco so as a native I sometimes take my hometown for granted. Since I’ve begun my San Francisco blog I’ve been traveling around like a tourist and it’s so much fun. We have so many things to offer here.

@Rhonda…Thank you for the comment.
@Jodapoet…I really want to go out and play the tourist role in my hometown. I think it would be fun to act completely lost and see how the people of my town would react and how to see just how they treat the beloved tourists.
I think that would make for an awesome entry and I may do that in the future. If you beat me to it, send me the link.

I agree with you. My hometown is called the city of waterfalls (in the Philippines) and I’d never visited its waterfalls before I had to tour around my college friends when they gave me a visit.

Charleston is being listed by CNN as the top vacation destination so you are in the right place. Watch for Tourist in you own Town discount passes in January.
