Walking Boston
Recently, my fiance and I had a weekend to ourselves. As we are combining two families with a total of four children, this was a rare occurrence. Pondering options, the suggestion of walking the Freedom Trail in Boston was offered. Since both of us enjoy history and physical activity, this was the winner.
Traveling to Boston on a Saturday, we had no traffic and easily found a parking spot in the garage at the Boston Common. However, once we left the garage there were no signs directing us to the start of the Freedom Trail. While it only took 10 minutes to locate the start of the trail, it seemed odd not to mark the beginning.
We chose to walk the trail on our own, though there are guided tours available throughout the day. We toured Park Street Church and King’s Chapel. While money was not a concern, we decided to forego touring any site that charged an admission, such as the Old South Meeting House. There was plenty of history to be absorbed for free.
Besides enjoying the history, we found other benefits on this walking tour. Having developed appetites on this trip, we stopped at Florentine Cafe in the North End for an excellent lunch. (To read my review of this restaurant, visit our sister site Tasty Thoughts.) The Freedom Trail also brought us through the farmer’s market at Haymarket Square. On our return trip, we studied our many options and bought multiple bags of fruits and vegetables at sensational prices.
Between walking the Freedom Trail, shopping the farmer’s market, and enjoying lunch, it was a 5-hour trip to Boston. A perfect day trip for two adults.
