Getting to India from the East Coast of the United States can prove to a long process depending on where your final destination is in India. There are many major international airports in India. The major ones are in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Bangalore. The main gateway flights are Chennai, Dehli, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Flights to India are typically done by Air India as well as the state owned Indian Airlines.  Indian Airlines actually offers flights to 20 different countries in Asia and the Middle East. Because India is such a large country, many people actually rely on air travel in order to get from one side of the country to the other. Other airlines that they use are Jet Airways and Air Sahrah. Jet Airways recently started non-stop flights to London! If I ever had to get to India, I think I would go via London or the Netherlands (my relatives live there).

Air travel in India has actually increased significantly. Comparing the amount of air travel that occurs now to airline traffic ten years ago is kind of crazy. The amounts have increased from 6% many years ago to 20%!

A ticket to India may cost you anywhere from $1000 to $2000 if you are flying with economy class. The cheapest tie to go is during the monsoon period, June to August, but then again, how much is great weather worth to you?

Traveling to India will require a decent amount of paperwork. One of the steps you have to take is to get a visa and pay the visa fee associated with it. As for the cost of getting a visa, it is pretty pricey and depends on the Consulate and region that you are planning on visiting. An onward or return ticket is needed in order to qualify for a tourist visa. You should speak with a travel agent or a professional prior to booking a trip to India. It would be pretty terrible if you were stranded there for a reason that could have been prevented in the first place!
