Holland

I’ll start with some clarification: Holland is a term that can presently be used interchangeably with The Netherlands. Officially, the country is The Netherlands; Holland is simply a province, like Alberta, Canada, but it has come to be an acceptable term when referring to the entire country. The people of Holland are Dutch, and they speak Dutch as well.

I’m Dutch, and I’m proud of it. I love when my family takes its semi-annual trip to the beloved country. My direct family is the only part of my extended family that lives in the U.S., so one of the reasons I enjoy Holland is to see my family, of course, but the country offers much more.

The main form of transportation in Holland is the bicycle. You can read more about that on our sister site, bikes My Fitness Tunes. When you’re in Holland, all you need is a bike, and you can get anywhere. That might sound like a bad idea to you if you live in a hilly neighborhood, but in Holland, there really aren’t many hills. It’s all flat, so 20 miles can seem like a walk in the park. Find a route, and you’ll probably go past the picture perfect landscapes like windmills and fields of tulips. They aren’t famous for them for nothing.

A big attraction in Holland is simply its capital city, Amsterdam. The streets are beautiful, and the canals running between them remind me of Venice. It includes popular sites, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House. The spirit in Holland is simply amazing. If you’re around during the peak of the soccer season, I’m sure you won’t turn a corner without seeing an overload of orange (their national color).

Holland is a country for those who love to stroll (or bike) and see sites. If that sounds like a perfect day for you, book your next flight to Holland.
