I think that I can be safe in assuming that people often associate Holland as a place where they ride their bicycles, a lot, but can you guess how many bikes there are in Munster, Germany?
If you said 100,000, you are wrong. If you said over 500,000 then “ding ding ding!” you are correct! Considering that the population of Munster is about 250,000 people… that is a lot of bikes. During my two week break from work this summer I was able to visit a few places in Europe, and Munster was one of them. Munster was actually the first stop on my trip. After my friend, and currentA suite-mate, from college picked me up at the DA?sseldorf airport, we drove for about two hours and arrived at her home in Munster.
The neighborhoods looked like the typical European neighborhoods with the houses being close together and every family having a small yard. My suite-mate’s house was green and wasA convenientlyA located a fifteen minute bike ride from “everywhere.”
During the first night there, my suite-mate did not want to overwhelm me with German culture so we started the night with dinner at her house (which was a heftyA lasagnaA type dish). We then got on our bicycles, my suite-mate’s family had a grand total of five bikes for three people, and peddled our way toward theA canal. A We continued our journey down the path by the canal and eventually stopped at a place that my suite-mate said was one of the most popular hangout spots.
It was really cool. The club had transformed this outdoor area that was right on the water into a beach bar- complete with sand, tiki bars, and beach chairs. It was extremely out of place but a lot of fun! After meeting up with my suite-mate’s brother we decided to bike back and turn in for an early night. My suite-mate said that I was going to want to rest up for what I had ahead of me in coming days.
Stay tuned in and check back next week for more German adventures …
