The National Centre for the Performing Arts is the premiere center for performing arts in all of India. This center is home to many difference artistic venues including dance, theater, and music. It’s also home to educational programs like classical music and children’s music. Let’s take a closer look at what the NCPA has to offer in music, theater, plays, and dance.
Music: NCPA offers a wide variety of musical performances including western music and Indian music. You can enjoy a variety of sounds including pop music, jazz, chamber orchestras, and more. They’ve got many different musical events throughout the year including the Sama’a’ Sufi Music Festival next month, which will be a three-day event complete with music, dance, and more. Later in December, the NCPA will host One World Many Musics, a cultural fest of music from all over the world.
Theater: Mumbai is the prime spot for those who love theater and the NCPA is definitely the spot to visit if you want to see live theater or cinematic presentations. The Centrestage Theater Festival takes place in November. This festival provides a wide range of media including readings, plays, films, workshops, and more. Centrestagel often showcases international production; for example, last year they had productions from the United Kingdom and Malaysia. They also had 15 play premieres in four different languages.
Dance: Besides music and live theater, the NCPA also hosts many dance performances including the NCPA Umang Series, a group of special festivals that incorporate dance moves with music and poetry. Each month, there is a different festival with a different performance. Last September it was Odissi by Kalyani Phagre and this month it was Evocations. Next month is to be announced.
