Paris, France

Europe, France

I’ve traveled to France twice in my life. The first time was when I was too little to remember. The second time was over five years ago, but it left some lasting impressions and I feel like I’m overdue for another visit.

Luckily for my family and I, we have friends in France who live just a half an hour from Paris. Unfortunately for you, I have no experiences with hotels or bed & breakfasts in the area. From what I know, if you’re willing to pay the price, you can find a place to stay just about anywhere in the city. Students of my school will be taking a trip to France next year and plan on staying in a hotel that has aA magnificent view of the Eiffel Tower.

There’sA a magical feeling that comes along with theA Eiffel Tower (and the rest of Paris).A While the actual structure has been replicated to various extents (including the half-size version in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the twenty meterA one in Paris, Texas), the effect of the true Eiffel Tower cannot be duplicated. Looking down, from the observation deck 902 feet above the ground, you can see all of Paris, including the striking Arc de Triomphe.

To appreciate Paris, it helps to know some of the history. The Arc de Triomphe honors those that fought for France in the wars, and it has names of those soldiers inscribed on it. Underneath, there is also the tomb of soldier with an unknown identity. The building thatA is nowA the Louvre was actually a fortress built in the 12th century (nearly a millennium ago). Even the Eiffel Tower has a history most may not know. It was constructedA from 1887-1889, as an entrance forA the World’s Fair, and only was intended to stand for 20 years beforeA being dismantled;A many Parisians considered it ugly. Fortunately for the rest of us, it proved to be useful for communication, so the tower was permitted to stay.

I’ve been lucky enough to live just outside Paris for three years. I must say that during a normal day and going about normal business, I think the Eiffel Tower is a bot of an eyesore. The view from the top is fantastic of course, but it is fantastic from other places too. And at night it is amazing when it’s all lit up. There are so many breathtaking sights in and around Paris, but I think the Eiffel Tower is over-rated.
