Seattle, Washington

harbor stepsIf you really love sunshine and blue skies, Seattle, Washington, might not be the optimal travel destination. Seattle has a reputation for being a rainy city, and it seems quite a reasonable judgment based on the fact that they average about 226 cloudy days per year. (In truth, Seattle doesn’t actually break the top ten in a list of USA’s rainiest cities.) It is currently ranked as the 25th most populous city in the U.S.

Seattle has so many great places to visit. It is home to the Space Needle, possibly the most prominent feature in Seattle’s skyline.A Throughout the years,A the Harbor Steps have been the site of a number of different art exhibits that make the steps worth some time on any visit. For the coffee addicts, there’s either a Starbucks, Seattle’s Best Coffee, or Tully’s on just about every corner. Starbucks was founded in Seattle in 1971, and the first shop can be visited just a block from its original location. There are over 150 places to visit that have been designated as Historic by the National Register of Historic places.

Seattle has been featured in a number of fictional films and TV series. Notable movies are 10 Things I Hate About You featuring Julia Stiles, The Ring featuring Naomi Watts, and Sleepless in Seattle featuring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks (which even includes a scene on the Space Needle). Visiting Seattle also will give you the chance to come across areas where episodes ofA Frasier or Grey’s Anatomy were filmed. In the Doonesbury comic strip, many of the characters reside in Seattle.

One more note about Seattle is that it is quite hilly. It is said to have been built upon seven hills, and this is apparent even when simply strolling around the city. I can’t imagine that using a bike to get around would be much help; the roads can be very steep. Several streets have 20% slopes, a dangerous incline when the conditions are anything less than ideal.

For a large city, Seattle is very well kept. The tourist attractions are there, but they aren’t overwhelming like in many other cities and let you enjoy the city at ease.
