This Summer in Yukon

by Jane Wangersky June 11th, 2012 | Canada
Summer is the time to visit northern Canada. Not only is there almost endless daylight, there are plenty of events, services, and works of nature to help you enjoy it.

Today I'm focusing on the territory called Yukon  and some possibly surprising things you probably didn't know about it (I know I didn't till I started doing my research this week).

  • According to the Territorial government, "All Yukon communities have access to a high-level of internet and broadband". Off the beaten path doesn't mean offline.

  • Visitor Information Centers are open seven days a week, 12 hours a day (eight to eight) in

Halifax: From the Sea, Wealth

by Mackenzie M. May 29th, 2012 | Canada
When many vacationers from the United States plan a trip to Canada, they focus on the beautiful Rocky Mountains, the skyscrapers of Toronto, or the Francophone culture of Quebec. Although these sights are worth a visit, there lies a largely undiscovered tourism center on the far eastern reaches of the Atlantic Provinces. Juan de Fuca, Galiano, and Cordova

by Jane Wangersky May 16th, 2012 | Canada
These three places hardly sound like they belong in Canada -- but Spanish place names are not uncommon along the coast of British Columbia (and Washington State). Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, like Juan de Fuca Strait, is named for one of the earliest visitors from Spain -- Ioannis Fokas. He was a Greek pilot, working for Spain, and better known

Printemps à Montréal

by Mackenzie M. May 3rd, 2012 | Canada
At Wasabi Media Group, we have written previous articles about what to do in Montreal, but this article will highlight all of the best ways to spend spring in the city. The months of April, May, and June are some of the absolute best months to visit “La Belle Ville.” As the temperatures begin to climb, flowers and trees begin to bloom, all over the city. Old Montreal and public markets start to become lively with people once again, and street musicians once again grace downtown street corners. If there is any time to visit Montreal, Quebec, now is

How French is Canada?

by Jane Wangersky April 18th, 2012 | Canada, Travel Planning
There's a story, which may be an urban myth, of an American family telling Canadian border guards that they'd been taking French lessons for two years to get ready for their trip to Canada.

Most people know,or at least would've found out before they'd done much travel planning, that English is the language of choice in most provinces and territories of Canada. Now that I've said that, let me explain why it's not really that simple.

By the numbers, 57.8% of the people speak English as a first language, 22.1% speak French, and as for the other 20% or so, it
