Craving ice cream? Where are the best places to cool down (not that anyone needs it) in San Francisco this summer?
1. Mitchell’s Ice Cream
Opened in 1953 by brothers, Larry and Jack Mitchell, it started as a neighborhood ice cream shop and expanded into A a San Francisco landmark. Featuring tropical flavors, like baby coconut, ube and macapuno, plus regular flavors, including banana, chocolate, coffee and vanilla, Mitchell’s has become A a part of San Francisco tradition.
688 San Jose Ave, San Francisco, CA 94110; Tel. (415)648-2300
2. Miyako Old-Fashioned Ice Cream
Miyako Old-Fashioned Ice Cream serves Dreyer’s and Mitchell’s ice cream with an Asian and Pacific flair. Don’t expect a Japanese lady to serve you but do expect someone who knows his ice cream.
1470 Fillmore St. San Francisco, CA 94118; Tel. (415) 931-5260
3. Bi-Rite Creamery
Bi-Rite Creamery may be the “greenest” ice cream shop in town. They source out products from local suppliers, including nearby Straus Family Farms for the organic dairy and even Ritual Coffee Roasters for their Coffee Toffee flavors. The granitas, sorbets and popsicles use fruits from local farms plus they use biodegradable cups and spoons and organic sugar cones.
3692 18th St. San Francisco, CA 94110; Tel (415) 626-5600
4. Marco Polo Italian Ice Cream
Located in the Parkside neighborhood, Marco Polo Italian Ice Cream reflects the travels of Marco Polo, from Asia back to Italy. They have flavors like jackfruit, arcobaleno (mix of almond, pistachio, vanilla and chocolate). According to some, this is “gelato Asian-style”.
1447 Taraval St. San Francisco, CA 94116; Tel (415)731-2833
5. Swensen’s Ice Cream
In 1948, Earle Swensen opened his first ice cream parlor in San Francisco to share the great ice cream his father used to make. It since has expanded its stores and is available worldwide. This ice cream parlor also has expanded into a restaurant and offers salads and sandwiches. Be part of history and visit the still-original location of Swensen Ice Cream at Russian Hill.
1999 Hyde St. San Francisco, CA 94109; Tel. (415)775-6818
Summer may be almost over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice bowl of ice cream in the city.
