Mexico’s economy is suffering right now. Why? The swine flu scare. Even though the swine flu scare happened about a month ago, people are still worrying about it and are, therefore, no longer willingly traveling to Mexico. Part of the reason is because the Center for Disease control had a ban on nonessential travel to Mexico. However, this ban was lifted on May 15th–which was not too long ago.
Tourist attractions such as historic sites, restaurants, and museums are gaining their business back, but it has been a tough month for these businesses that depend on the tourists’ money. Perhaps suffering the most during this disease scare are the hotels. Many of these hotels are now offering up to 70% discounts–meaning that they are practically begging for people to come to Mexico to enjoy the sunshine.
Because hotels saw more than a 50% drop in occupancy this past month, hotels have been offering ridiculous amounts of deals. For instance, the extremely popularA Maya Tulum Wellness Retreat & Spa is normally a place that does not offer any sort of discount. However, itA is offering a summer rate from $1,368 a person for a seven-nightA Mind, Body and Spirit PackageA from now until October. This package includes three meals a day, spa treatments, dailyA yogaA sessions and nature tours. To make the deal even better, A guests in June or July get an extra 30 percent off that price.
Okay, so now you may be convinced that hotels are cheaper than ever in Mexico, but what about the flights? Well, cheap flights are also extremely easy to find. Rates for nonstop round-trip flights from New York were as low as $270 to CancA?n and $280 toA Mexico City. There is a company called Apple Vacations that will start offering $199 round-trip flights.
Even though the swine flu scare still exists, now is a good time, economically, to visit Mexico, if you can. Another thing to note is that because travel to Mexico is extremely cheap, nearby countries such as Jamaica are vying for tourists and are lowering their prices as well.
